Exactly 6 years ago today, the first lines of code were committed to the Strapi project repository on GitHub. Back then, Aurélien, Jim and I were working as freelance developers while being students. Frustrated by the limitations of traditional CMS, we decided to create our own piece of software: Strapi.
The name Strapi comes from Bootstrap your API because before becoming a Headless CMS, Strapi was a mix between a framework for building APIs and a CMS.
But the story really began in 2017, when we decided to work full time on the project and rebuild it from scratch based on the feedback from early adopters. We released the v3.alpha, a new website, and new documentation and that’s when the number of users started to grow slowly but surely.
Fast forward to 2019, everything started to accelerate. The numbers of community members grew exponentially as developers led the shift from traditional to Headless CMS. Thanks to a $4M seed round led by Accel, we were able to introduce several game-changing features such as the Dynamic Zones and Components.
In 2020, Index Ventures preempted our $10M Series A. COVID-19 acted as a forcing function to transform Strapi, from an office-based company to a worldwide, remote organization. We published the stable version of Strapi and announced the Enterprise Edition.
In 2021, we have been mostly focused on building a stellar team of 45 full-time passionate Strapiers to execute on our vision to make every type of content accessible anywhere. We hosted StrapiConf, our first user conference back in April and now getting ready to launch Strapi v4 together with an official plugin Marketplace. Visit our website to learn more about our story and the Strapi team.

Pierre created Strapi with Aurélien and Jim back in 2015. He's a strong believer in open-source, remote and people-first organizations. You can also find him regularly windsurfing or mountain-biking!
